In Breach of Trust, the pressure to control fossil-fuel-based production of electricity and oil supplies for the world’s transportation needs, leads a shadow government to invoke murder and mayhem on the world’s renewable energy researchers. It’s a chilling tale in many respects.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is not as nefarious as my fictional shadow government. At least not to most people. However, the EPA ’s Clean Power Plan in the United States is compelling producers of electricity to shift from coal-based sources to natural gas and renewable energy sources. The idea is for major utilities to cut their carbon dioxide emissions by more than one-third. DTE Energy, for example, plans a 32 percent cut by 2030, compared to its 2005 level.
To achieve this goal, DTE plans on cutting coal as a source for producing electricity from 55 percent in 2015 to 25 percent in 2030. Making up this reduction will be an uptick in natural gas-based generation from 20 percent to a range between 30 and 45 percent, and at least a doubling in renewable energy-based generation (likely wind and solar) from 10 percent to a range encompassing 15 to 30 percent, over the same period.

In the meantime, existing nuclear power generation will remain flat at 15 percent between 2015 and 2030.
As you digest these facts, consider those in positions of power who continue to resist the adoption of cleaner energy sources, simply because it’s not in their best interests.
